How PPI was mis-sold

Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) has been massively mis-sold for more than two decades, making it one of the biggest financial scandals the UK has ever known.

More than £33.3 billion has already been paid out in compensation for successful claims since January 2011 according to the FCA**. More money has been set aside by the banks to pay future successful claims before the claims deadline of August 29th 2019.

Note: Our PPI Claim fee of 20% + VAT (so 24%° of the total redress offered by your lender) is payable if your claim is successful. That means if we don’t recover you anything, you don’t pay us a penny

You can submit a claim directly to the lender yourself for no charge. You can also approach the Financial Ombudsman Service and Financial Services Compensation Scheme for free to review your case, providing it falls within their remit and you have approached your lender first.

How many?

No-one is exactly sure how many PPI policies have been sold overall, though the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) estimates this figure to be as many as 64 million.‖

It was actually a good product, meant to help consumers to make their payments on credit agreements if they came out of work through accident, sickness or unemployment.

Unfortunately it was sometimes mis-sold to people who didn't want it, didn't need it and would never have been able to make a viable claim on the policy.

How was it mis-sold?

It is likely your relative or loved one was mis-sold PPI if they experienced any of the following:

  • felt pressured into buying PPI or told they must have PPI
  • offered a cheaper rate if they bought PPI
  • already covered by another policy
  • received full sick pay from their employer
  • were told their loan or credit application was more likely to be accepted if they bought PPI
  • PPI was added without telling them
  • they were advised to buy PPI that did not suit their circumstances or needs
  • they were self-employed, unemployed or retired but advised to buy PPI
  • they had a pre-existing medial condition at the time of buying PPI, which may have affected their ability to make an insurance claim
  • they were advised that a pre-existing medical condition was included in their PPI policy (or advised that it wasn't included)
  • it was not made clear that they would pay interest on the PPI if it was added to the loan
  • it was not made clear that the PPI would end before the loan or credit was repaid
  • the amount of commission paid on the sale was not revealed at the time
